Diabetes mellitus, often known as Type 2 Diabetes, is a growing global public health problem. Changes in lifestyle have further exacerbated the situation to become a top health worry. Though frightening, the condition is treatable. Doctors, however, point out one fact most diabetics and the general public do not understand is insulin absorption in the body.
Diabetes is a collection of diseases that affect the way the body processes blood glucose, generally known as blood sugar. To avoid difficulties, it is necessary to keep blood sugar levels within a certain range. According to research, certain vitamins can help in treating diabetic problems. However, before taking any supplements, patients should think about potential drug side effects and safety concerns.
Dr Ajay Agarwal, Internal medicine, Fortis Hospital, New Delhi, told that vitamin D is necessary for diabetic patients as it helps in insulin secretion. So, if there is a decrease in the level of vitamin D in the body, it also decreases insulin function. It plays an important part in managing insulin levels.
He added, “Taking supplements rich in vitamin D is advised only to those patients who have vitamin D deficiency, and in case they do not have a deficiency it is advised otherwise. Consuming fat-soluble supplements can increase the vitamin levels in the body and can turn toxic. It may also reverse the action by increasing the level of insulin in the body.”
According to Medical News Today, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) warned that consumers should first consider if a supplement is even beneficial. Some components, for example, may induce hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, or poorly interact with diabetic treatments.
The data shows that vitamin D may reduce the chance of developing autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes and may improve insulin sensitivity.
Dr Ajay suggested, “Taking a balanced meal with all nutrients is very important with 40 per cent carbohydrates, 30 per cent proteins, 10-15 per cent fats and other micronutrients are also required for everyday consumption.
The patient who has diabetes and is on medications (Metmorfin) may require vitamin B12, sometimes they need vitamin D supplements and other needed supplements to meet the requirement of the body. It is advised to avoid processed food and exercise regularly, he concluded.
