Here we are wrapping up annual Diabetes Awareness Month, which continues to be marked by COVID-19 and the effects of all things pandemic. Still, this November has been lively as ever with many hot topics brewing across the diabetes social media sphere.
Here is our roundup of social media and online posts that caught our eye during November 2021. Please don’t forget to let us know about any another noteworthy posts you noticed this month.
November is the big awareness month for our Diabetes Community and there are countless campaigns and initiatives everywhere you turn. With 2021 marking a century since insulin’s discovery, there is even more historic significance this year.
Our community was heartbroken to hear of the passing of Scott Strange, a longtime T1D advocate and blogger who volunteered at many advocacy conferences/meetings, and generously gave much of himself to people with diabetes over his impressive 50+ years of living with diabetes. Rest in peace, Friend.
Unfortunately, the pandemic has helped create an insulin supply issue for those using Novo Nordisk insulins. The company reports that a temporary manufacturing issue coupled with global shipping delays because of the COVID-19 have led to some not being able to access their needed insulin in a timely manner. Novo says the manufacturing issue has already been resolved, and they expect any delays to be resolved by early December. We appreciate Beta Cell Podcast, Juicebox Podcast, and advocate Cherise Shockley for being some of the first to share this news. For the record, DiabetesMine asked Sanofi and Eli Lilly about supply chain issues, and both said they have not experienced any pandemic era problems.
Streaming shows and movies are all the rage these days, and with that in mind, it’s great to see our friend Chelcie Rice, a professional comedian, keeping up the humor on the diabetes front. And yes, Chelcie: We would totally binge that show if it were on Disney+ to watch.
ICYMI, the Disney Pixar movie Turning Red released a new trailer featuring not just one, but at least TWO characters who seem to be living with diabetes and wearing medical devices. Very cool to see this representation in the mainstream!
Marking World Diabetes Day on Nov. 14, Rep. Katie Porter from California called out the Insulin Pricing Crisis in America by wearing a set of earrings made out of glass insulin vials. You can read this People story all about it.
Longtime T1D advocate Riva Greenberg shared her own World Diabetes Day story about how she’d been curious about purchasing insulin in Canada more affordably than it’s available in the United States. Definitely worth a read.
We often go through an abundance of supplies in our life with diabetes, and this post by Mary Elizabeth on Instagram puts it all out there for the world to see in terms of just how much expense and waste is created in the course of a month. She writes: “It’s not cute. It’s not easy. It’s most certainly not the punch line of any jokes. It is so much more than that.” (See also: “Going Green with Diabetes Devices.”)
You owe no one. In Australia, our blogging friend Renza Scibilia has a great post on how we must live with this condition and do what we need to do, and no one has the right to judge.
