Dining with Diabetes was the program topic at the Moundsville Lions Club meeting on Tuesday, with the presentation by Cheryl Kaczor, Family and Community Development Agent/Associate Professor of the Marshall County Extension Service/West Virginia University in Marshall County.
Dining with Diabetes is a free program for people with diabetes and their family members.
Until the past couple of years this program had been held at Moundsville Pharmacy, but because of COVID-19 it has been online, but Kaczor announced at Tuesday’s meeting that in March it will be returning to the pharmacy..
Her presentation dealt with a number of issues including “What is Diabetes.” She described diabetes as a common, serious, and costly lifestyle disease.
It was pointed out for those with Type 1, the body makes little or no insulin, due to an overactive autoimmune system, so people with Type 1 must take insulin every day. Type 1 diabetes usually occurs in children and young adults.
For those with Type 2, the body prevents the insulin it does make from working correctly, or it may not make enough insulin. Most people with diabetes have Type 2.
Kaczor stated that Dining with Diabetes will teach a person how to prepare meals that are both good for a person and that taste good.

A new word is being used in Marshall County Schools this year, and Tuesday evening it was explained to members of the Marshall County Board of Education.
The word is PASS, which stands for “Pupils Attitude toward Self & School.”
PASS is an online survey that students will take at their school to help identify barriers to learning. Students will take PASS twice a year.
During the board meeting a sample survey of five questions was explained to board members. It was pointed out that PASS addresses the non-academic barriers to learning experienced by students, and that these barriers can be broken down into three categories: School Connectedness, Self-Efficacy, and Motivation.
When the students complete the survey, reports are generated at three levels from which the data can be used by each school.
Marshall County Schools purchased PASS for a three-year period.

Debra Kotson from Cook II, Central Elementary School to Cafeteria Manager at CES.
Nicole M. Bellanco was employed as Special Education Aide/Autism Mentor at Cameron Elementary School/Itinerant.
Paula Esposition from Split Level Aide/ECCAT, Sand Hill Elementary School/Itinerant to Pre-Kindergarten Aide/ECCAT at Center McMechen Elementary School/Itinerant.

Reservations are being taken for the Marshall County Schools 2023 spring Adult Education classes.
Among classes being offered will be Welding, Introduction to 3D Printing and Home Repair.
Classes are offered on a first-come, first-served.

Marshall County Schools Pre-K registration for 2023-24 school year, for children who turn 4 years of age prior to July 1, 2023, has begun.
Anyone wishing to enroll their child in Pre-K are to call the school in their area to make an appointment and pick-up a registration packet or request an application packet by mailed to them. The application is also available on the Marshall County School website at boe.mars.k12.wv.us.
WV Pre-K Programs are free for any child who turns 4 prior to July 1, 2023.
Marshall County Schools also welcomes all new students entering kindergarten in August 2023, if a child is not currently enrolled in a Marshall County Schools Pre-K class.

The Moundsville VFW Auxiliary No. 437 will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the VFW building.
Students who participated in the Patriot Pen competition from local middle schools will be recognized.
Member Della Deskins asks that any Auxiliary member who knows of a member who is in nursing home or has cancer to contact her at 304-810-5192.

The John Marshall High Golf Team has been informed that Ethan Cook has committed to play golf next season for Coach Obecny at West Liberty University. Ethan is the son of Steve and Shannon Cook of Glen Dale.
He started playing golf following his freshman year at JM, and has gone on to be a three-year letter winner. His senior year had a scoring average of 74. According to coach Dave Gaudino, it was the lowest scoring average for a JM golfer in more than two decades.
Gaudino said that Cook became the sixth JM golfer to continue their athletic and academic careers on the college level in the past seven year, following Kailey Pettit (WLU), Colton Patrello (Fairmont), Clarissa Edgar (WLU), Lakyn Parker (WLU) and Lauren Tekely (Washington and Jefferson).
Cook plans to major in education at West Liberty.
