Head- R&D, Kapiva
India is the diabetes capital of the world. A joint survey by ICMR and NCDIR puts the number of adults living with diabetes in India as high as 69.9 million by 2025, and 80 million by 2030. While the country has been living with diabetes for decades – most cases have gone undiagnosed. With the pandemic, the disease has now become a mainstream conversation. Covid-19 triggered a tsunami of diabetes – on one end it led to lowered immunity among diabetic patients. On the other end, it increased the risk of Type 2 diabetes in patients (as per German Center for Diabetes Research report). Niti Aayog’s health index also revealed that Covid worsened the state of diabetes in the country.
Hence, the need of the hour is to a) prevent diabetes with immunity building and b) manage diabetes better with a natural and proactive approach. Ayurveda can aid in both situations, effectively.
As an Ayurvedic expert, I recommend practicing home based management hacks mentioned below to control diabetes through the preventive rather than curative route –
1: Start with the basics – Fix your sleeping and eating schedule and stick to it!
The most crucial one is also the most straightforward. The time between dinner and, in fact, all meals, should be adequate. It is advised that you wait three hours between each meal. Another essential process for preserving health is sleep. Each day, one needs to receive at least 7 hours of restful sleep. It has been demonstrated to treat hormonal problems and enhance immunity while reducing chronic inflammation and managing physical and emotional stress.
2: Make Ayurvedic home remedies your new holy grail
Numerous Ayurvedic herbs are effective at controlling or preventing diabetes. It will help to include ingredients like fenugreek seeds, amla, and turmeric. The greatest Ayurvedic remedy for lowering blood sugar is said to be Nisha Amalki. Amla powder and turmeric powder, both of which can be incredibly healthy if consumed daily. (Fun fact: They are used in equal parts to create the magic potion). Additionally, there are a number of juices created with a combination of amla, jamun, and karela that are specifically designed for diabetics and those at risk to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
3: Take out time to move your body
When it comes to preventing practically any disease, exercising is a no-brainer. It supports maintaining both blood sugar levels and general wellness. Any type of exercise—gym, yoga, or pranayama—can help you increase your metabolism and guarantee that your pancreas is functioning properly.
4: Switch to natural sugars instead of white sugar
White sugar, which most people use everyday, is largely empty calories and has little nutritious value. Making it a part of your diet will do you absolutely no good. Therefore, switching to natural sugar from fruits, jaggery, or honey is strongly advised.
