The number of cases of diabetes is steadily increasing in the world. India is home to 7.7 crore cases of diabetes. According to World Health Organization, the number of diabetics in India may increase to 12 crores by the year 2025. Unfortunately, 30 per cent of people are ignorant of the symptoms of this disease. This leads to a delay in diagnosis of the ailment which in turn causes serious health issues for the patient. Diabetes mellitus is a common type of diabetes which is correlated to the blood sugar levels in the body. Let us hear what experts have to say about this disease.

Dr Aishwarya Krishnamurthy, Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali says that most of the food consumed by us is broken down into glucose and enters the bloodstream. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas which helps glucose to reach every cell of the body. This glucose aids the different cells in carrying out their functions.
Diabetes develops when either our body does not produce sufficient insulin (Type-1 diabetes mellitus – T1DM) or is unable to use this insulin efficiently (T2DM). This disease is also seen in young children, mostly in the form of Type-2 diabetes.
People suffering from obesity, and poor dietary and lifestyle habits are more at risk of developing diabetes mellitus. Such patients become resistant to insulin. In other words, the insulin produced in their bodies is not utilized as much as it should be. This leads to an increase in blood sugar levels.
People who suffer from obesity are in danger of developing diabetes. Hence, it is important to keep one’s weight in control.
Diabetes causes blood sugar levels to be elevated. This disease adversely affects the eyes too. This medical condition is termed Diabetic Retinopathy. It can even cause loss of vision. Diabetics are at risk of developing heart disease too.
Kidneys may also be adversely affected by this ailment.
So, it is extremely important to carefully regulate one’s diet and lifestyle. If blood sugar levels in the body are in control, then the risk of developing diabetes and other diseases will be reduced.
