Daewoong Pharmaceutical said on Thursday Envlo (ingredient: enavogliflozin), a new diabetes drug that inhibits sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2), obtained domestic approval as monotherapy, metformin combination therapy, and metformin and gemigliptin combination therapy, to treat type-2 diabetes.
SGLT-2 inhibitors reduce blood sugar by selectively inhibiting SGLT-2 in the proximal tubules of the kidneys. They are involved in reabsorbing glucose and discharging it through urine.
The Korean Diabetes Association recommended using SGLT-2 inhibitors to improve cardiovascular conditions.
As of 2021, SGLT-2 inhibitor-based diabetes treatments made up 27 trillion won ($20.8 billion) out of the 93 trillion won global type 2 diabetes market.
In Korea, the SGLT-2 inhibitor market is estimated at around 150 billion won.
In October, Daewoong said it confirmed the treatment’s blood sugar reduction effect and safety of Envlo in phase 3 clinical trials. Envlo’s 0.3 mg formulation presented new treatment options for patients suffering from insufficient glycemic control, it added.
Daewoong said it would immediately proceed with Envlo’s insurance benefits and drug price-related procedures to release Envlo’s monotherapy, metformin combination therapy, and metformin and gemigliptin combination therapy in the market in the first half of 2023.
Simultaneously, the company is also preparing Envlo's entry into 10 major countries including China, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia by 2025, and will later expand to 50 countries by 2030, said a company official.
Additional indications are also being prepared together with ongoing clinical trials for the metformin combo therapy that are scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2023.
