Bethany Women’s Club makes
plans for various projects
BETHANY — The GFWCWV Bethany Woman’s Club met Oct. 17 at Bethany Memorial Church with President Helen Moren presiding and extending the welcome.
Reports were given by Charlotte Chambers, secretary, and the treasurer’s report by Moren.
Advocates for Children Week will be celebrated by making a donation to CASA, an acronym for Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children. Halloween favors will be made for residents of two local nursing homes.
Members will be working with local first responders on the child safety seat emergency identification stickers. The November project will involve making soup for veterans.
The club plans to participate in Wreaths Across America with Judy Pyle serving as chairman.
A Terri Lynn fundraiser project will be pursued.
It was announced that the Southeastern Region Conference is being held Oct. 27-30 in Lexington, Ky. The club entered a contest, placing first in the state. The report was based on education, and it will be entered in competition at the region meeting along with seven other states.
Free diabetes workshop Nov. 5 at Morning Star Baptist Church
WEIRTON — Morning Star Baptist Church, located at 3124 Weir Ave., Weirton, will be hosting a free diabetes workshop in observance of November being National Diabetes Awareness Month.
The workshop will be held Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and include a free box lunch. Anyone is welcome to attend and is asked to RSVP by Nov. 2 by contacting B.J. Bryant, workshop chairman, by phone at (304) 748-2320 or through e-mail at bjbryant2015@gmail.com.
The guest facilitator is diabetes educator Amy Butts, physician assistant, endocrinology.
“Diabetes and You: Who’s the Boss?” will be the topic from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. An American Diabetes Association booklet — “How to Thrive: A Guide for Your Journey with Diabetes” — will be provided. There will be information on the Medicate Part D savings model to help seniors afford insulin, and there will be a discussion and hands-on experience with continuous glucose monitoring devices and insulin delivery devices.
From 11:30 a.m. to noon, the topic is “Flipping the Switch” with an A1C and time/range monitoring testimonial presented by John and Joni Jackson.
A box lunch is provided from noon to to 1 p.m.
Cabbage roll, pierogi sale
under way at Weirton church
WEIRTON — A frozen, uncooked cabbage roll and cheese and potato pierogi sale sponsored by St. Nicholas Orthodox Church is under way through Nov. 14.
The cost for six cabbage rolls is $20, and a dozen pierogis is $12. Orders can be placed by calling (304) 479-0196.
The scheduled order pickup is Nov. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church Hall, 604 Colliers Way, across from Weirton Medical Center.
Mount Zion Baptist planning community Thanksgiving meal
STEUBENVILLE — Mount Zion Baptist Church, located at 221 N. Seventh St., Steubenville, will be the site of a community Thanksgiving celebration on Nov. 6, beginning at 1 p.m.
All are welcome to attend the free meal.
Volunteers and donations of food and money for it are being sought, according to organizer Tammy Gregory, who can be contacted at (740) 381-8525 or (740) 282-9244.
The Thanksgiving dinner will include turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, green beans, yams, cranberry sauce, rolls, sweet potato pie and water, punch and apple cider.
Volunteers are needed as servers but also for setup and cleanup.
‘Treasure hunt’ Friday at
mission’s Seventh Street Plaza
STEUBENVILLE — Bargain hunters are invited to a “treasure hunt” sale set for Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Urban Mission’s Seventh Street Plaza.
The sale is a take-what-you-need, pay-what-you-can sale, an Urban Thrift spokesperson noted.
Weirton United Way Turkey Trot scheduled for Nov. 19
WEIRTON — The Weirton United Way Turkey Trot will be held at Marland Heights Park, Weirton, on Nov. 19.
The fundraiser will include the 5K run/walk, the 1-mile kids fun run and the toddler dash. Entry forms are available at the United Way or register online at https://register.chronotrack.com/r/69031. Questions can be directed to Angela Myers,race coordinator, at (304) 670-2148.
There will be a food drive to benefit the Salvation Army and the Community Bread Basket.
