WEST HARTFORD, CT — The West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District is hosting a virtual program starting Wednesday, Jan. 11, to help diabetics manage their condition, something likely necessary following a recent holiday season of culinary revelry.
Folks can join registered dietitian and certified care and diabetes education specialist Paula Kellogg Leibovitz for a virtual, seven-week series on managing diabetes and eating well while following diabetic guidelines.
The program will run on Wednesdays: Jan. 11, 18 and 25; as well as Feb. 1, 8, 15 and 22.
There are both daytime and evening sessions, with daytime sessions running from 10 a.m. to noon and evening sessions running from 6 to 8 p.m.
The series is for individuals with type 2 diabetes who are newly diagnosed or who may need an update on managing their diabetes.
Topics include:
• Meal planning using the plate method and beginning carbohydrate counting.
• Label reading.
• Monitoring your blood glucose.
• Setting goals for your blood glucose and A1C.
• Diabetes medications and how they work.
• Exercising safely.
• What to do when you are ill.
There is opportunity for questions and comments during the virtual learning experience.
This workshop is supported by a grant from CT Department of Public Health to the West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District.
Registration is required. To register, call Susan at the West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District, 860-561-7909. Workshop materials will be sent prior to the start of the series.
