Medical tech company Medtronic is teaming up with Nutrino, an AI powered personalized nutrition platform. Nutrino’s FoodPrint Report technology will now be integrated into Medtronic’s iPro2 myLog app, a platform that connects with a continuous glucose monitor to help give users insights about their glucose levels.
The new technology will enable doctors and clinicians to see the food that a person has logged during their iPro2 cgm evaluation.
“By making it easier to communicate relevant, personal insights about food’s impact on diabetes, Medtronic arms physicians and diabetes educators with a powerful coaching tool that will help drive positive behavior change,” Sheri Dodd, vice president and general manager for Non-Intensive Diabetes Therapies (NDT), said in a statement. “Our partnership with Nutrino to infuse more detail about diet’s impact on glucose furthers our goal to make glucose a vital sign in the treatment of diabetes.”
The newly integrated technology will let users see how their bodies react to different foods and will show them the connection between a meal and glucose variability.
Users can log their food by taking a picture of each snack or meal. Then the AI-powered program matches each food entry with the users’ glucose levels following the meal. Every six days the app is synched with the patient’s sensor glucose data and creates a Pattern Snapshot report and a FoodPrint report. The snapshot report shows user’s their glucose level, target range and patterns, according to a statement. The FoodPrint report will show users all of their recorded meals with an accompanying score of A, B, C, D or F, based on the user’s glucose reaction to that meal.
The plan is for the two companies to expand its relationship and embed food data and FoodPrint insights across all of Medtronic’s Diabetes Group businesses, if the initial partnership goes well.
“We are proud to partner with Medtronic to deliver insights through the FoodPrint report, which can help people across the diabetes spectrum to better understand their responses to particular foods,” Yael Glassman, CEO of Nutrino Health, said in a statement. “We’re confident that the addition of FoodPrint into the iPro2 professional CGM evaluation will have a positive impact for individuals living with type 2 diabetes.”
This isn’t the first time Nutrino and Medtronic have teamed up. In 2016 Nutrino partnered with Medtronic so that people who use both Nutrino’s app and Medtronic’s MiniMed Connected system to connect their CGM and insulin pump to their smartphones will be able to pull data from Medtronic devices into Nutrino and put that data in the context with their food data.
But the startup has been gaining steam. In April, Nutrino landed $8 million in Series A funding. The company announced that it planned to use the funding to forge new partnerships within the food analytics and nutrition world. It also planned to use the money to develop its database and collect data on food items from around the world.
Besides Medtronic, Nutrino has landed partnerships with big name companies including Dexcom, Welltok, Abbott and IBM Watson.
