It is really important for people with diabetes to stay away from consuming sweets. But many people use ‘sugar-free’ sweeteners in the belief that they do not increase the sugar levels in the body and thus cause no harm. But the reality is exactly the opposite if recent research conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) on sugar-free sweeteners is to be believed.
The WHO report has brought to the fore some shocking facts. It shows that sugar-free sweeteners are much sweeter than regular sugar. The report also highlights what dangers they pose to our health. What are these sugar-free sweeteners that the WHO mentions in its report? Let us find out what their reality is.
Generally, sugar intake creates three major problems — an increase in blood sugar level, weight gain and dental problems. This is the reason why sugar-free sweeteners are used as an alternative to sugar and their consumption has increased rapidly over the past few years.
Diabetic patients use these sugar-free sweeteners thinking they will not increase their blood sugar levels. Also, those who want to lose weight consume them since it is claimed that they contain zero calories. It has been found that a sweetener named advantage is 20,000 times sweeter than regular table sugar. Therefore, instead of having any benefits, it actually harms our health. And if you consume sweeteners in high quantities, you are at a greater risk of contracting type-2 diabetes and heart diseases.
In 2021, the WHO investigated items that use these sweeteners in the United States and Hong Kong. The research revealed that in Hong Kong it is used in items from chewing gum, salad dressings, soft drinks and bread to instant noodles.
Moreover, a sweetener called stevia can cause damage to children’s teeth. It reaches children through sugar-free drinks and the ones consuming them are more prone to have toothaches as compared to their counterparts who do not. In its research report, the WHO advises people to avoid using these sweeteners.
On the other hand, a report in The Guardian cites research that demonstrates that sweeteners such as aspartame and stevia have no effect on our blood sugar levels.
It is largely accepted that sucrose and saccharin increase blood sugar. Another research done by Florida State University on the sweetener aspartame shows that it may increase anxiety in a person. Aspartame is used on a large scale in the production of soft drinks and foodstuffs across the world.
