Oxnard– So, once I get rolling, things go smoothly, then my email bell goes off, and I’m sitting on the precipice of a mess. Let me explain; I heard from the printer and found out that because of the Holiday, I need a finished version of the latest paper in less than 18 hours.
Now I understand about the Holiday, but a little more warning would have been helpful. In other words, there was no way I could round everyone up with no notice.
Okay, it’s not a problem I can’t handle. I’ve dealt with thousands of issues over the years, especially when I was in the restaurant business, and the key is a good plan, good communication, and execution.
So I get a local printer to work with. Although the Holiday will delay the paper until early Tuesday at best, a local printer gives me more flexibility than waiting for a delivery. I spoke with my staff, and we were all on the same page.
Little did I know that I was sitting over a trap door. As someone living with Type 1 Diabetes, diet consistency is the key to my success. Each morning, I have a breakfast sandwich and take eight units of insulin. For some reason, that morning, my insulin turned into super insulin, and my Blood Sugar, which is supposed to be 100, dropped to five, and I ended up on the floor in convulsions.
Nobody heard from me for over five hours, so my designer called the lady I bought the paper from, and she started calling me and said you don’t sound right.
With her on the phone, I grabbed carbos out of the cabinet, store-brand corn chips, to be exact, and I ate the entire bag. My designer and the former owner saved my life,
Once I was coherent, my designer worked with me to prepare the paper and got it ready for the online version that’s currently available. With all that said, I consumed an entire bag of corn chips. I took extra insulin, so I did not throw up because of high blood sugar. It happens when a Diabetic eats too many carbohydrates, trust me.
That was a mistake. I had another bad low and fell through a cheap table early Thanksgiving morning, but I somehow saved my computers on the table.
I woke hours later and called the J-Train for help. She was upstairs. She fed me carbohydrates, and I fell asleep again.
When I recovered, I set my phone alarm to go off every three hours so I could test my blood timely. Even though I cut my insulin intake by 75 percent, I had another low.
I’m going to the doctor next week and getting a meter installed on my stomach with a low and high alarm. Set a plan and execute. The life of a Diabetic, oh yes.
Issues affecting us all outweigh my Diabetic needs, which is why I keep going, although everyone told me to slow down. For example, I was at the store on Friday to shop, but before getting in the big line to pay, I stopped at the restrooms.
When I came out, my cart was gone, so someone grabbed it with all my items and walked past security. I asked the person at the door why that person was there since it proved to be no help, and the person started yelling at me. The funny thing is that I’ve heard public comments at meetings saying a good diversion program will rescue these people.
Do you know what else would work? Give up on this pie-in-the-sky dream and make theft a felony. Right now, if it’s valued at less than $950, it’s a misdemeanor. The soft-on-crime approach does not work, period! Get over it.
