RANDOLPH, Vt., December 2, 2022— More than a dozen members of the community attended Gifford Wellness’s free diabetes informational event on Thursday at Gifford’s Conference Center. Gifford’s expert care team of educators, nutritionists, podiatrists, physical therapists and counselors gave presentations on a variety of topics related to type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Theresa Osmer and Barbara Waldo from Randolph were two of the attendees. Osmer was recently told by her provider that she’s on track for a diabetes diagnosis if she doesn’t make some changes.
“I came to the event because it had information that I needed to check out,” Osmer said. “I know there are certain foods to avoid, but through the presentations, I was made aware of other foods that can potentially bring on diabetes,” Osmer said.
One of the presentations featured a video with Paul Grandy, a participant in Diabetes Management Courses offered by Gifford through a grant from the State of Vermont. Grandy was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in January 2021. With the help of his lifestyle coach, Grandy has lost a few pounds and no longer needs to take blood pressure medication four months into the six-month program.
“Through lifestyle changes, coaching, and dietician assistance, you can definitely turn it around,” Grandy said.
This is the first event for Gifford Wellness, a new initiative aiming to provide information to our community on a wide variety of health topics through in-person events, educational and informative videos, blog posts, and social media.
“People need to know how much help in this area there really is,” Waldo said. “We need to reach out and take advantage of that.”
