The clinical dietitian at Fox Army Health Center has added three new classes to provide guidance for diabetes support, performance nutrition and meal planning.
“We have access to a wide range of information these days so often when we try to find information to help us navigate issues like diabetes, meal planning, or eating for enhanced performance, we run into information that promotes restriction or unsustainable exercise as guidance for getting ‘healthy,’” Heather Hough, Fox’s clinical dietitian, said. “These classes are meant to help clients establish self-care behaviors that are sustainable and effective.”
The classes, which are offered in in-person and virtual formats, are open to Tricare beneficiaries. The classes are limited to 10 participants for each session.
Hough said the classes can assist people with nutrition and movement that “may lead to improvement in blood glucose, physical performance or confidence when feeding themselves or their family.”
Hough, a registered dietitian and licensed dietitian, is also a certified diabetes care and education specialist and her Diabetes Support Class offers a holistic approach to managing glucose through the exploration of eating patterns, movement, sleep, and stress management.
According to the American Diabetes Association, 37.3 million Americans, or 11.3% of the population, had diabetes in 2019, and 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year.
About 550,149 people in Alabama, or 14.1% of the adult population, have diagnosed diabetes, and an additional 119,000 people in Alabama have diabetes but don’t know it, which greatly increases their health risk.
According to the association, Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, occurs when your body doesn’t use insulin properly. For those with type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin.
The Diabetes Support Class will be held the first Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. in the Wellness Center Classroom that is located in Fox Army Health Center and can be accessed through preventive medicine, and the second Wednesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. in the Virtual Video Clinic.
To sign up for this class and the other two classes, go to the front desk at Fox Army Health Center or call 955-8888 and choose option 2. Hough said that when people sign up, they will know they are signing up for a virtual class, but the access link will come to them via email.
Another class is Performance Nutrition, in which participants can learn about nutrient needs, meal planning and hydration to enhance training and performance.
Hough said that some people who are training for leisure-type performance activities and trying to diet may be “underfeeding themselves.”
The class is the second Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. in the Wellness Center Classroom or the third Wednesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. in the Virtual Video Clinic.
Another class, Meal Planning for 1, 2 or More, explores strategies and resources to help turn groceries into meals.
The class is the first Wednesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. in Virtual Video Class or the third Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. in the Wellness Clinic Classroom.
