Many of those suffering from diabetes are confused over including the amount of rice in their daily diet. They remain in a dilemma as to how many carbohydrates they can consume in their meal.
For them, the moot question is — should the patients with diabetes eat carbohydrate-rich foods such as rice and wheat or not?
Carbohydrates are broken into glucose and are later absorbed into our bloodstream. Sugar and starch can increase the sugar level in our blood.
Dr Sonia Gandhi, head of the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics at Fortis, Mohali, says that 40-45 per cent of the total kilocalorie a day for diabetes patients is provided through carbohydrates.
Let’s check with experts as to how much rice a diabetic patient should consume to keep blood sugar in control.
According to experts, diabetic patients need to know how much rice to eat. They believe that diabetics can consume at least 30 gm of raw rice a day. Thirty grams of rice contain carbohydrates equal to 30 chapatis made of wheat. The rate of glucose absorption from rice is high.
According to the Portion Size List issued by the National Institute of Nutrition a portion size is calculated for 30 gm of uncooked rice.
The intake of carbohydrates in a day among diabetic patients depends on a person’s height, weight, exercise regimen and medication.
Experts say diabetic patients can take carbohydrates, and calories in small portions after a set interval of time. Generally, doctors advise their patients to avoid consuming carbohydrates altogether. Diabetics must pay attention to he quality and quantity of carbohydrates.
They should avoid taking sugar, refined flour, potatoes, bananas, gingerbread, honey, juices and processed foods.
Instead of common carbohydrates, diabetic patients should consume complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, pulses, legumes, fruits and vegetables.
Dr Gandhi says that since brown rice has more fibre than white rice, the former is preferable for patients with diabetes as it helps keep sugar levels in check. This is despite the fact that white and brown rice do not differ much in terms of carbohydrate content.
Consuming rice with vegetables, pulses and beans can increase the nutritional content in our food. Boiled rice can be healthier if more vegetables are added in the form of khichdi or pulao. Also, diabetics should take a diet keeping in mind the glycemic index.
